History:
About five years ago a group of Newman Center crafters formed Newman Needleworks as part of the 2-Care program at St. Thomas More Newman Center. Our goal was to spend two hours per month serving the community through our crafting skills. The group began by meeting for two hours each month to make blankets for Project Linus, which is a national organization that provides hand-made, washable blankets to local children who need the special comfort of their very own blankets.
A major part of the Newman Needleworks ministry is teaching people to knit and crochet. Our group now includes new and experienced knitters, crocheters, and fabric crafters of all ages.
In June 2009, Newman Needleworks began the Baptismal stole project. We made approximately 200 stoles and this project has ended for now (until we need more stoles). These stoles are presented at all infant and child Baptisms here at St. Thomas More Newman Center. The stoles were knitted, crocheted and sewn.
We are also making prayer shawls. These are crocheted or knitted, and we attach a prayer tag to them. They are distributed in homes, hospitals and long term care centers. For instructions on how to make a prayer shawl, go to www.shawlministry.com
Other new and continuing projects include
Blankets and hats for Rainbow House (an emergency foster care facility)
Mittens, hats and scarves for Diocesan Refugee Services
Blankets for Birthright
Hats, afghans and prayer shawls for people undergoing chemo therapy.

Newman Needleworks meets twice a month during the school year. We meet the first and third Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More Newman Center and the third Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. Please check the bulletin for the meeting location. No crafting experience is necessary; we will teach you how to knit or crochet.
Have you heard of a charity needlework project you would like to get involved with? Come to Newman Needleworks and share your ideas. Our mission is to use our crafting skills to help others.
You can also be a part of the Newman Needleworks ministry by (1) making machine washable knitted or crocheted squares or blankets, or sewn/quilted blankets, and dropping them off at the St. Thomas More Newman Center office, or (2) donating machine washable yarn of any color, quantity or type to Newman Needleworks.
